The traditional boundaries of workforce planning are undergoing a fundamental transformation. As artificial intelligence advances from simple automation tools to active team members, human resources leaders face a new mandate. Brandon Metcalf, Founder and CEO of workforce orchestration company Asymbl, suggests that the future of talent management lies in a hybrid model where humans and digital workers co-exist.

At Asymbl, this concept is not a distant theory. The organisation operates with a workforce makeup that is roughly 60 per cent digital and 40 per cent human. This framework has enabled the company to scale rapidly while remaining profitable, offering a clear blueprint for modern CHROs navigating technological disruption.

Humanising AI Agents for Seamless Integration

One of the primary challenges for HR leaders is driving employee adoption of AI tools. Metcalf notes that viewing AI through the lens of a full-fledged worker, rather than just an assistant or a tool, changes how the entire business interacts with the technology.

To bridge the gap between human staff and AI agents, Asymbl humanises its digital workers. For instance, their digital sales development representative is named Theodore Frank. When performing well, the team calls him Teddy, but when performance dips and adjustments are needed, they address him by his full name. This simple approach helped the human team relate to the AI as a colleague whose outputs require inspection and coaching, rather than an abstract piece of software.

For CHROs, the practical takeaway is clear. To successfully integrate digital labor, roles should be structured with the same rigour as human positions:

  • Full Job Descriptions: Digital workers require explicitly defined roles and tasks to execute.

  • Key Performance Indicators (KPIs): Clear, measurable benchmarks are necessary to track success and operational output and performance.

  • Assigned Human Managers: Every digital worker needs a human manager who is accountable for coaching the AI agent, monitoring its performance, and managing system redundancies or downtime.

By framing AI agents as employees, human staff members effectively transition into managers of digital assets, unlocking higher levels of individual productivity and engagement.

Unlocking Tangible Productivity Gains

Many enterprises have struggled with “agent washing,” where software is hastily labelled as an AI agent without changing underlying workflows, leading to failed implementations. True ROI comes from structural workforce orchestration rather than superficial automation.

The financial impact of a well-orchestrated hybrid workforce can be substantial. Asymbl witnessed a 5 million dollar productivity impact in 2025, which grew to a 13 million dollar impact in 2026. These metrics demonstrate that digital workers can successfully execute complex business functions, such as content curation, real-time financial and operational intelligence analysis, and lead qualification.

Instead of trying to automate entire departments at once, Metcalf advises HR leaders to start small. Selecting one specific job to be done allows the organisation to prove the value and ROI of a digital worker before expanding the hybrid model to other business functions.

The New Skill Set for HR Leaders

As organisations look ahead toward 2027, the role of the CHRO will increasingly focus on workforce orchestration. HR professionals are uniquely positioned to lead this transition because they inherently understand human dynamics, compliance, performance standards, and fairness.

To stay ahead of this shift, CHROs should focus on developing specific capabilities within their teams:

  • Understand AI Categorisation: HR leaders must learn the distinctions between assistive AI, generative tools, and autonomous digital workers to deploy them effectively.

  • Redefine Headcount Planning: Forward-thinking leaders must collaborate with the executive team to determine which roles should remain human, which can be digital, and which require a hybrid approach.

  • Focus on Management Capabilities: The biggest future talent acquisition challenge will be finding humans who possess the specific skills required to manage digital workforces.

While technological advancement will inevitably replace certain administrative tasks, it simultaneously creates immense opportunities for professionals who learn to manage these new systems. By treating digital labour with the same structured governance as human talent, CHROs can position their organisations at the forefront of modern business efficiency.
