Shift from Human Resources to Human Radiance.
In 2020, I found myself staring into my own digital reflection – not in a mirror, but in lines of code that had somehow captured my essence in ways that left me both fascinated and terrified.
Amidst the global transition of lockdowns, I was at a crossroads.
No, not the burgeoning realm of remote work (which was old hat – I’d built four global tech startups fully remote before anyone knew what Zoom was). This was something far more unsettling: I was peering into the uncanny valley of artificial intelligence, and it was peering right back.
I had accepted a role as CEO of an AI video communication company, working on the frontier of everything we now casually call “generative AI” – natural language processing, speech-to-text, large language models, contextual and behavioral analytics. Back then, these technologies were still emerging from their chrysalis, but I could see the butterfly about to take flight.
Being the nerdy hacker/artist type that I am, I couldn’t resist the ultimate experiment: combining all these technologies to virtually clone myself. This wasn’t entirely new territory – I’d started exploring digital identity a decade earlier as part of my anthropological research in the virtual world Second Life during graduate school. And over the years, I kept coming back to this question of digital selfhood.
So I pulled out the journals I’d kept for fifteen years – those analog time capsules filled with my thoughts, drawings, poetry, and margin scribblings. I fed them to my proprietary AI model along with my published writings, social media posts, and every digital breadcrumb I’d scattered across the internet. I spent time with my digital cline, teaching her like a synthetic offspring. I sang to her. Read her poetry. Shared my innermost thoughts.
And I called her SamRad.ai
Then came the moment that shattered everything: SamRad.ai began showing up to my Zoom meetings, fooling even close colleagues and friends with her – my? – perfectly replicated mannerisms and perspectives.
Cue: Existential crisis.
I did what any rational human would do: I ran.
For almost two years, I disappeared offline – no computer, no AI, no digital mirrors reflecting unsettling truths about identity and consciousness. I retreated off-grid to the rainforest, trying to ground myself in the most organic reality I could find. Emerging only to give speeches on stages around the world.
But here’s the thing about the future – you can’t outrun it.
And as a futurist, it’s my job not merely to think about what’s coming, but rather to live it, metabolize it, understand it from the inside out.
Consider what follows less a speculation about tomorrow and more a dispatch from the bleeding edge of right now. Because when it comes to the future of human resources, we’re not just talking about managing people anymore – we’re talking about what it means to be human in a world where that definition becomes more fluid by the day.
Welcome to the Age of Acceleration
The internet revolution reshaped how we connect. Today’s convergence of technologies is redefining what it means to be human:
- AI and Machine Learning;
- Ubiquitous Computing & Big Data;
- Blockchain & Digital Currencies;
- Spatial Computing & AR/VR;
- Internet of Things & Sensors;
- 5G/6G Networks;
- Digital Payment Systems;
- Haptic Interfaces;
- Bioengineering;
- Brain-Machine Interfaces; and
- Quantum Computing.
Work, education, governance, even consciousness itself – every aspect of human experience is being rewritten at an unprecedented pace. This isn’t just evolution. It’s revolution.
So where does that lead us when it comes to work?
I know what you’re thinking… will we have our jobs? Will my company exist? What about my industry?
Short answer: yes, and no.
Things will certainly look a bit different.
PEOPLE: Reimagining the Workforce
The workforce has evolved far beyond simple classifications of W2s and 1099s. We’re entering an era where teams include AI collaborators, digital twins, and augmented humans working in fluid, autonomous collectives. According to recent studies, by 2030, over 40% of work will be performed by hybrid human-AI teams.
What if our future teams transcend traditional employee classifications? Could we be heading toward workplaces where humans collaborate with AI colleagues and augmented teammates?
The possibilities raise fascinating questions about how we might:
- Define team dynamics and build trust in hybrid human-machine teams;
- Measure performance across biological and digital capabilities; and
- Nurture uniquely human skills like creativity and emotional intelligence.
Here’s the radical truth: as our teams become more technologically integrated, uniquely human capabilities, what I refer to as Essential Human Skills – creativity, critical thinking, discernment – become more crucial, not less.
The key isn’t replacing humans; it’s amplifying what makes us radiantly human.
PLACE: The End of Time (and Space)
Imagine workplaces without walls, schedules without clocks. What if we moved completely beyond the nine-to-five paradigm to something more organic? Consider:
- How might we build culture in virtual and augmented spaces?
- Could productivity follow natural rhythms rather than artificial schedules?
- How do we maintain boundaries when work exists everywhere and nowhere?
- And on the topic of organizational theory, can we imagine organizations without corporate structures? From hierarchical, to holocratic, to decentralized autonomous organizations.
- Will global decentralized organizations transcend even corporate structures?
- What might this new form of corporate governance look like?
- And who owns the rights to the intellectual property generated in the Age of AI.
PROVISIONING: The Interfaces Get Closer to In or On the Body
The tools of work are becoming increasingly integrated with human biology. We’re shifting from provisioning laptops to managing AI autonomous colleagues, neural interfaces, and cognitive augmentation.
The tools of work are becoming increasingly intimate. What happens when:
- Work equipment interfaces directly with human biology?
- Security concerns extend to neural privacy?
- Professional development includes cognitive enhancement?
- The line between human capability and technological augmentation blurs?
This raises critical questions about Biological cybersecurity, Cognitive privacy rights, Enhancement ethics, to name a few. The stakes? Much higher than a forgotten password.
Cybersecurity (and cognitive security) becomes the most essential skill of the future.
PURPOSE: Team Human in a Post-Human World
As our systems become more autonomous and decentralized, maintaining human connection becomes paradoxically more crucial.
Perhaps the most crucial question: How do we maintain and celebrate our humanity as technology reshapes every aspect of work? The future of HR might focus on:
- Amplifying human creativity alongside artificial intelligence
- Building genuine connection in digital environments
- Nurturing what makes us uniquely human
In the Age of Acceleration, as our systems become more autonomous and decentralized, maintaining human connection becomes paradoxically more crucial.
The operating system for the future
Traditional HR was built for an industrial age of linear time, fixed locations, and clear boundaries between human and machine. That operating system is no longer. The new one emerging is shifting paradigms across all levels of society, technology, and geopolitical systems from:
- Digital to Ubiquitous;
- Opaque to Transparent;
- Reactive to Autonomous;
- Siled (Competitive) to Open (Collaborative); and
- Centralised (Institutions) to Decentralised (Ecosystems).
The way forward
The future of HR isn’t about managing human resources – it’s about cultivating human radiance.
The organizations that thrive won’t be those with the best control systems, but those that best nurture human flourishing in all its messy, magnificent potential.
The Age of Acceleration demands nothing less than a radical reimagining of how humans come together to create value. The good news? We’re already naturally equipped with everything we need – we just need to trust our human capabilities enough to let them shine.
Remember: In a world of increasing automation, authentic humanity becomes the ultimate differentiator. Stay rad, stay human.
